The Knight of
Holiness, The Redcrosse. The hero gets his
name from the blood-red cross painted on his shield. He is given a task by
Queen Gloriana (the greatest Glorious Queen of Faerie Land) to fight a
terrible dragon.
The quest he’s been
sent on is to slay fearsome dragon.Riding next to him,
on white donkey, is a lovely lady whose face hidden under a black veil, and by
her side walks a milk-white lamb.Travelling along with
them is a dwarf, a servant.
As they travel, a
storm breaks upon them and they rush to find cover in a nearby forest. They found a nice
shady grove and think it might be a good place to rest since it’s very dark and
full of windy paths leading into the forest. When the sky is
clear, they find that they are lost. They
discover a cave in the thickest part of the forest
The lady warns him to
be careful but Redcrosee says it would be
cowardly not to investigate. They have arrived in
“Errour den” and
that Errour is a horrible monster. The dwarf recommends
they leave immediately but Redcrosse doesn’t listen. The enters into the
cave and sees the monster: half-serpent, half woman. She wraps the knight
up in her tail but eventually he manages to strangle her and chops off her
head. Errour’s babies
then drink up her blood, “making her death their life” until they burst apart
and die.
The lady sees Redcrosse’s victory
and congratulates him, and they then find their way out of the forest. After a long time,
they come across an old man. He seem extremely sad.
The old man want to
tell them about evil man. Redcrosse love to hear about
someone like that. As the travelers
sleep, the old man reveals himself as a black sorcerer, the Archimago.
Archimago, the
sorcerer casts a spell and conjures up two spirits to trouble Redcrosse. The first spirit
obtains a false dream from Morpheus, the god of sleep. Another spirit takes
the shape of Una, the lady accompanying Redcrosse.
When Redcrosse wakes
up, he finds the other spirit (appearing as Una) laying
next to him, offering a kiss. However, the Knight
resists the temptation and goes back to sleep. Archimago then
tries again: turns the other spirit into a young man and puts him besides the
false Una in a bed.
Archimago then
wakes Redcrosse up and shows him the
two lovers.
Furious, Redcrosse leaves
her the next morning, disappointed for she has spoiled her virtue with another
man.
